Blue Heron at Christmas

Great Blue Heron why are you here?

Your peers have flown south by this time of year.

The pond is all covered, with heavy dark ice.

The dearth of fresh food can't feel very nice.

Predators are roaming hither, and yon.

It's not safe to tarry by the side of this pond.

I hope that you've gone before the next morn.

Flown away south where life is yet warm.

I'll look for you surely, late in the Spring.

A Heron at Christmas? What a curious thing.
